Retired By Year

As of the start of the 2009 hurricane season, 74 storm names have been retired (starting in 1953 when the list was made up exclusively of female names). NOTE: Many news organizations ran a widely published Associated Press story on April 6th, 2006 regarding retired names of storms. The AP story referred to 67 names being retired- that number is wrong (or at least the AP did not explain itself well): the correct amount is 68 (the missing storm is Gracie of 1959).
