2005 holds the record for most names retired in a single hurricane season (five).

What happens when we get past “W”? The naming process reverts to the Greek alphabet starting with Alpha, then Beta, then Gamma. For those of you who have forgotten the rest: Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Nu, Xi, Omicron, Pi, Rho, Sigma, Tau, Upsilon, Phi, Chi, Psi and Omega (ah- memories of frat and sorority days huh?!).

BTW, when a hurricane’s name is retired, it can actually be used again, but not before a ten year period. Retirement of a name occurs to avoid confusion (i.e. history, insurance, legal actions, etc…). Names are retired after a request to the World Meteorological Organization by the country most affected by the storm. To date (May 2011), no name has been retired twice from the Atlantic Basin list.

And last but not least: only three names have ever been retired from the Pacific Basin list: Ismael (a 1995 storm), Pauline (a 1997 storm) and Kenna (a 2002 storm).

If you’re looking for an official link of retired names, check out this list from the NHC.
